Whether you’re a small business owner, influencer, or entertainer, having a large following on social media is more than beneficial, it's necessary. The more followers you have the more clicks your site gets, your sales go up, and your content gets shared. If you’re just starting your business or have been struggling to gain followers, have no fear. Today, we're going to break down some tried and true methods that will help you grow your followers and drive engagement.

Know Your Audience

Knowing your audience is key to growing your followers. First and foremost, pinpoint what social platforms your audience tends to hang out on. Is it Facebook? Instagram? Twitter? TikTok? It's a good idea to build up and maintain about two social platforms, any more than that, and you can stretch yourself thin.

Once you know what platforms your audience will be on, start pinpointing who all falls into your ideal audience. Things to look for include:

  • Gender
  • Age
  • Race
  • Religion
  • Occupation
  • Education Level

Once you've determined who fits into your audience, then you can begin creating captivating content.

Create Captivating Content

Alright, so you've pinpointed your audience, now the creative part can begin! When creating your content it needs to be eye-catching, informative, and appealing to your audience. Think of the needs and wants your audience has and provide it for them. What is it that your product and service will do for them?

While many platforms rely heavily on visuals, don't discount captivating text. Text and visuals work together to bring your audience in. Create high-quality images or graphics and try to keep them consistent with your brand voice and colors. When writing captions, make sure to ask questions or for recommendations or even giveaways. This will help drive up your engagement!

Get Personal

In an artificial world, your audience wants to see authenticity. That means, show your face! Your followers want to know that they are following a real person or organization. If you share some personal details, your audience will be more likely to connect with you and your brand or business.

The other side to this is engaging with your audience as much as possible. That means answering their questions, responding to their comments, and thanking them for all of their support. Your audience is taking the time to follow and engage with you, give them something in return.

Post-Consistently

To get the most notice on social media, you need to be posting consistently. And, depending on the platform, you need to be using all of the features provided by the platform. For example, on Instagram, you need to post stories, reels, static posts, and IGTV consistently to get picked up by the algorithm.

Along with posting consistently, you need to post at the correct time. Find out when your audience is most active on social media and schedule your posts to go out around then.

Use Hashtags

Hashtags are a great way to get noticed on social media. However, if you're not using them correctly, they won't be of much help. Surprisingly, you can have too many or too few hashtags on certain platforms. On Instagram, it's suggested that you use 30 hashtags on a post. Make sure they are a mix of generic and custom hashtags, this will help your audience find you!

For accounts like LinkedIn, less is more. Stick to about seven hashtags here. Same for platforms like Facebook.

Final Thoughts

Don't get discouraged if you don't gain thousands of followers right away. Growing your audience takes work and if you don't put the work in your brand won't grow. Try to stick to being as authentic as possible. People like to see the real you. They like to know that your life isn't always sunshine and daisies, also. Don't be afraid to take criticism and make changes to your brand if need be. You're building a business here, and part of that is growing and shifting.
